Honolulu Complete Streets Implementation Projects

PROJECT SUMMARY: In 2009, the State of Hawaii passed a law requiring all counties and the state DOT to adopt their own Complete Streets policies. The City and County of Honolulu passed its Complete Streets policy (Ordinance 12-15) in 2012. In 2016, the City and County of Honolulu adopted its own Complete Streets Design Manual to move forward implementation of improvements to make Honolulu’s streets and neighborhoods safe and inviting for users of all ages or abilities.

The City and County of Honolulu is now working to implement Complete Streets by updating policies, adopting guidelines, and applying these principles in all aspects of work. This includes standalone planning and design projects to look at improvements to specific streets or neighborhoods. Nelson\Nygaard and PBR Hawaii were contracted for the University & McCully, Kalihi, and Ala Pono Complete Streets implementation projects.

ROLE: As a member of Nelson\Nygaard’s project staff, I produced maps for use in community meetings, web communications, and reporting. Some of the maps I produced were featured in the City and County of Honolulu’s Complete Streets project boards at the 2018 NACTO Designing Cities conference. In addition, I provided research, writing, and mapping for the Ala Pono Alternatives Analysis and Draft Environmental Assessment.
